Preparation
Donuts
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 400F. Grease your donut baking pans.
Step 2
Whisk 2 1/3 cups (280g) of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 2 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg in a large bowl and keep aside.
Step 3
In a separate bowl, mix 1 1/2 cups whole buttermilk (room temperature), 1 large egg (room temperature), 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted), 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract.
Step 4
Pour the buttermilk mixture (Step 3) into the flour mixture from Step 2. Whisk until fully incorporated.
Tip: do not over-mix as this can create tough donuts.
Step 5
Using a ladle or serving spoon, fill a piping bag with donut batter.
Step 6
Pipe batter into donut pan, filling each well 1/2 way.
Tip 1: if you do not have a piping bag, option to use a teaspoon to fill the well (approximately 2 teaspoons per donut).
Tip 2: do not overfill to avoid donut baking over the hole.
Step 7
Bake for 8-10 minutes. You know your donuts are ready when they are puffed and lightly golden. Transfer onto cooling rack and proceed with topping.
Option to enjoy plain sans toppings.
Step 8
While donuts are baking, prepare toppings - option 1: cinnamon-sugar; option 2: vanilla glaze.Â
Cinnamon-sugar:Â
Step 1
In a small-medium sized bowl, use a fork to mix 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Step 2
Allow donuts to cool for 2 minutes then toss into the cinnamon-sugar mixture.Â
Tip: if donuts are too cool preventing the cinnamon-sugar coating to stick, lightly brush the surface of the donut with melted butter then toss into cinnamon-sugar mixture.
Vanilla glaze:
Step 1
In a small-medium sized bowl, use a fork to mix 1 1/2 cups of icing sugar, 4 teaspoons of whole milk, 1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract.
Step 2
Once donuts have cooled, dip into the glaze and return on cooling rack for glaze to set.
Option to top with sprinkles immediately after dipping in glaze.
